HUMANE SOCIETY OFFERS TIPS TO KEEP PETS SAFE DURING HOLIDAYS - UPDATED!

Updated hazard information follows:

Raisins and nuts.. please watch your pets during this holiday season when you will have many goodies out!

Be certain that pets are wearing collars with current ID tags. More pets accidentally escape the house when there’s lots of commotion. 95% of pets with ID tags are quickly returned home while 95% of pets without tags never make it home.

Try to keep pets on the regular exercise and feeding schedule. Provide plenty of love and attention so they don’t feel left out and do something unpleasant or dangerous to get attention. When there’s lots of commotion or a party, put pets in a separate, more quiet place with some of their toys, a comfortable place to lie and classical music playing softly to help them relax. They’ll feel safer and less stressed.

Secure trees to wall or ceiling to prevent them from toppling over on playful pets.

Keep curious pets from the trash where hazards abound: bones, wrapping paper, foil, six-pack beverage holders, string wrappings that came around hams or roasts...

Watch where you place lit candles so your pets don’t tip them over or get burned with wax.

Never put ribbon or yarn around your pet’s neck. It is a strangling/choking hazard easily avoided. If ingested it can damage intestines.

Mountain View Animal Emergency in Hagerstown is also ready to help with your pet emergencies. (301) 733-7339.
