HUMANE SOCIETY SEEKS COMMUNITY HELP IN CONSTRUCTION OF DOG ACTIVITY YARDS

The Humane Society of Morgan County recently received a donation designated to the construction of activity yards for the dogs there. Having learned that currently there’s just one volunteer, who once weekly walks the dogs housed in the kennel, the donor responded to the urgent need with funding to get “the dog yards project” started right away. With this funding to complete the site preparation phase of this project, Assistant Manager Barbie Ginck and Former Director Susan Kemenyas, got right to work organizing the project with the goal of getting as much as possible to be done with donated materials and by volunteer labor - not only to conserve limited project funds, but also to make the dog yards a real community effort in response to the needs of the dogs.
If all stays on schedule, it is expected that the trees to be removed will be dropped and taken away by September 1st, the local excavator hired to clear and level the site will be done by September 4th, and gravel donated for the utility road being made to access the site and to surface the project site will be delivered on September 5th all in preparation of the actual construction phase of the project on Saturday, September 6th and Sunday, September 7th.
Saturday, September 6th is the day schedule for digging post holes, placing posts and setting them in concrete with Sunday, September, 7th being the day the fencing is to be stretched and hung and the gates are to be set in place. Many able-bodied volunteers are needed for both days to accomplish this project.
Once the yards are completed, the dogs will be able to get out of their runs in the kennel more frequently which will greatly benefit their physical and mental well-being. A local trainer plans to work with a student group from Berkeley Springs High School to do basic training and leash manners with the dogs to help them be their best as good companion animals.
If you can help one or both days, or prior to the project, or you are able to donate project materials or refreshments for the workers, please call Susan Kemenyas at (304) 258-7841.
