- Remember that antifreeze is poisonous. Be sure to thoroughly
clean up spills or drips around your vehicle or in your garage because the
sweet taste of it is appealing to pets and the tiniest
amount can kill.
- More dogs are lost during the winter than any other time
of the year because they so easily
lose their ability to navigate by scent in cold or by sight in a snowstorm. Avoid
letting your
dog off the leash in the winter to help eliminate one of the major pet hazards
of winter.
- If you bathe your animal at home, be sure it is completely dry before
letting bathed pet outside.
- Never leave a pet alone in a car during cold weather. A car can act
as a refrigerator in the winter, holding in the cold and causing the animal
to freeze to death. If you see an animal trapped in a parked vehicle contact
the local police to intervene.
- Protect pet from frostbite, remove ice and snow from your pet’s paws and coat right away. Frostbitten skin can turn reddish, white or gray. If you suspect frostbite, take your pet to a warm place immediately. Thaw out frostbitten areas slowly by applying warm (but not hot) towels, changing frequently. Contact your veterinarian as soon as possible for further evaluation.
- Make sure our pet has a warm place to sleep, off the floor and away from drafts.
